JoAnn Watson Detroit City Council. Detroit Politics, Detroit Election 2009.
My plans to revitalize Detroit address the following priorities:
•Prioritize ownership and control of Detroit's water, land and public schools.
•Promotion of Fair trade policies to promote Detroit businesses, women-owned businesses and award contracts to Detroit's majority residents.
•Provide policy oversight to ensure effective allocation of federal and state funds to City. Currently more than $100 million is at risk because of gaps of accountability.
•End insurance redlining and predatory lending practices.
•Enact safe centers for children, elders and families at risk of crime, violence, homelessness, hunger, lack of transportation, utility shut- offs, abuse and related issues.
•Adopt Universal Health Care Policies, low-cost prescriptions for seniors and a plan to win federal dollars to address Detroit’s unanswered physical, mental and environmental health risks.
•Develop mechanisms with the Faith Community for the redistribution of one million dollars in illegal drug profits annually to fund drug prevention programs.
•Adoption of practices and policies to facilitate Detroiters as owners-not just consumers. Detroit’s population is 85% African American and business, contract awards and investments should reflect same.
